SteelCAL involved the application of advanced multimedia technologies to the training of students in structural steelwork design.
Epistemics worked on SteelCAL for the Steel Construction Institute (SCI), which is probably the world's largest research and technical organisation supporting the use of steel in construction.
The prime objective of SteelCAL was to apply advanced multimedia technologies to the training of students in structural steelwork design with particular reference to training in the use of Eurocodes. SteelCAL provided a knowledge-based computer-assisted-learning system designed for use by subject experts with little or no experience in the use of computer-based authoring tools. The combination of established material, a rich multimedia environment and IDS sharing a common knowledge base offers economies of scale and is applicable to other disciplines.
Epistemics role was to provide the telematic-based document-delivery system for the main CAL engine. The system integrated all the work carried out on the WIVISS, SSEDTA and ATR projects - multilingual, translation tools, course preparation and knowledge-based delivery.
